Announcing Guest Speaker Mauricio “Tony” Becerra, Freedom Writer

Mauricio “Tony” Becerra was in Ms. Erin Gruwell’s freshmen English class in Long Beach, CA. Tony grew up in poverty with little liking to school due to teasing and hard home life; violence also surrounded Tony’s life. Ms. Gruwell’s class brought together students from different backgrounds; Ms. Gruwell’s students went on to learn from their challenges and to write a diary know as The Freedom Writers Diary. Tony shared his story in Ms. Gruwell’s class and will join North Monterey County High School on our Day of Respect. Day of Respect is Friday February 23, 2018.
