Message From Dr. Turkie

Dear North Monterey County community,

I am truly honored to introduce myself as your new superintendent of North Monterey County Unified School District. My name is Dr. Matt Turkie, and I am excited and humbled to join this remarkable district. In an educational career that spans over 20 years I have served diverse communities as a secondary math teacher, principal, assistant superintendent, and most recently, as a senior director at the Monterey County Office of Education. I am passionate about education and its power to transform young people’s lives. I believe that all students can learn at high levels, regardless of race/ethnicity or socio-economic, EL, special education or LGBTQ status. I believe that all students deserve equitable access to a rigorous and relevant education that inspires them to discover their individual gifts and allows them to pursue the postsecondary options of their dreams.

To provide an equitable education such as this which prepares all students to graduate college, career, and life ready, I have three core values:

1. To have high expectations for all students and to provide the necessary support so that every student receives what they need to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
2. To be culturally responsive, human-centered, and kind. To be inclusive, collaborate across differences, and find common ground.
3. To engage in continuous improvement and data-based decision-making.

Together, with the support of our talented educators, staff, parents, and community partners, we will work to provide an outstanding educational experience for all students in the district. I am excited to embark on this journey with you all, and I look forward to learning from you, and getting to know each and every one of you in the days and months ahead.
