Multitudes: Reading Check
This year, North Monterey County USD is introducing a new early reading check called Multitudes. Starting in the 2025-2026 school year, California requires all schools to give a brief reading check every year in Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade. This is to identify reading needs early, provide the right support right away, and ensure every child can become a strong reader.

NMCUSD's Commitment to Every Reader
Learning to read is one of the most important milestones in your students education. At NMCUSD, we use a structured literacy approach that includes:
- Multitudes universal reading screening.
- Regular phonics and phonemic awareness assessments.
- Comprehensive reading diagnostics (i-Ready) three times a year.
- Evidence-based programs such as Benchmark Advanced/Adelante, Benchmark Phonics/Taller de fonética and UFLI.
We believe every child can learn to read, and it our shared responsibility to make sure they do.
