Educational Options is based on the premise that “one size doesn’t fit all.” Not all students will thrive or reach their full potential in the traditional comprehensive school. Our educational options programs offer non-traditional instructional structures to accommodate different student needs, interests and learning styles. At North Monterey County Unified School District, we have a continuation high school and also a K-12 alternative school of choice.
Central Bay Continuation High School is designed for students who are 16 years of age and older and at risk of not receiving a high school diploma due to a lack of credits, attendance issues, and/or a variety of concerns that place these students at serious risk of academic failure. The Central Bay staff is fully committed and focused on our main objective, which is to prepare all students for graduation. Our instructional program addresses the California State Common Core Standards and fulfills the requirements of the state and our local school board for earning a high school diploma. We offer an online credit recovery program, mental health counseling, academic counseling, teen parenting support and childcare, and career and vocational guidance services as an integral part of our program. Central Bay High School is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges Accrediting Commission.
North Monterey County Center for Independent Study
NMCCIS is a voluntary K-12 alternative school of choice which is an option for students who are experiencing difficulty participating in the traditional school setting and/or who want more individualized and self-regulated instruction. The school provides a standards-based K-12 educational program with a blended learning model consisting of one-on-one meetings between teachers and students, online learning, and site-based tutorials. NMCCIS offers technologically integrated course work, career and college counseling assistance, accredited college prep curriculum, UC-approved a-g courses, NCAA approved courses, and a diploma accepted for admission by US, CSU, private, military, and technical colleges. Additionally, NMCCIS provides flexible scheduling to accommodate students who travel or work, academically accelerated students and those concurrently enrolled in community college, amateur and professional student athletes, and students with diverse learning styles. Each student meets regularly with a credentialed teacher for academic instruction, assessment, and curricular goal setting. Students complete standards-based curriculum weekly and participate in all annual state testing opportunities. The North Monterey County Center for Independent Study is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges Accrediting Commission.
