The California High School Exit Exam


State law (Senate Bill 21), passed in 1999, authorized the development of the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) that student in California pubic schools will have to pass to receive a high school diploma, beginning with the graduating class of 2004. The purpose of the CAHSEE is to help ensure that students who graduate from high school can demonstrate competency in state content standards for reading, writing, and math.



CAHSEE Test Content

English Language Arts: This portion of the CAHSEE contains 80 multiple-choice questions and two essays that must be written by the student. The reading exam covers vocabulary, informational reading, and literary reading. The writing portion of the test covers writing strategies, applications, and conventions. Mathematics: The math part of the CAHSEE contains 85 multiple-choice questions that address state content standards through Algebra 1. Exam questions include statistics, data analysis and probability, number sense, measurement and geometry, mathematical reasoning, and algebra. CAHSEE Test Dates

Test dates vary from year to year. Tenth grade students may take the CAHSEE one time in the spring. Eleventh and twelth grade students can take the test three times per year. Call the high school for the next testing date at (831) 633-5221.
